Local Public School Alumnae Honors State Senator Kevin Parker

Brooklyn, NY – In recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedicated service to the community, The Girls High School Alumnae Association bestowed its highest honor on State Senator Kevin Parker.



Every year the Alumnae Association sponsors a luncheon to raise funds to provide scholarship to college bound students from the Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn. At the event, leaders in various fields of endeavors are selected for the Association’s service award. Among this year’s recipients, was Senator Parker, the representative of the 21st District and the Minority Whip of the New York State Senate.



"Providing accessibility to higher education is essential for the young people in our communities," said Senator Parker. "I am totally committed to this cause and the entire process of youth development."



Senator Parker, who sits on the Higher Education Committee in the Senate, is also a life long educator. His investment in education has taken him into the classroom as a professor of both African-American Studies and Political Science at several colleges including: Baruch College - CUNY, SUNY - Old Westbury, John Jay College - CUNY, Medgar Evers College - CUNY, City College, and Long Island University Brooklyn Campus.


His commitment to education has been recognized with several prestigious Fellowships during his three terms in office. As a freshman Senator he was selected as a Fellow by the acclaimed Flemming Leadership Institute, a program that trains emerging state legislators from across the 50 states. In 2005 he participated in an intensive government course work with elected and other professionals of various fields from around the country at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. He was one of 40 emerging state leaders from across the country to receive a Toll Fellowship from the Council Of State Government.


The Brooklyn Senator accepted the award at the Association’s luncheon which took place at Kingsborough Community College.
